What is a gummy smile? That is when you smile and you show too much of the gum tissue and not enough of your teeth. There are several things to consider in eliminating the gummy smile. First, are the teeth in the right place? The ideal front tooth should be about 10-11mm long. After it is determined if the bottom edge is in the right place, we go up 10-11mm and that is where we want the gum line. There are several ways to correct the gummy smile but diagnosis is the key. Gum surgery can be one option to lift the gums to the proper level. Braces can also help move the teeth and gums up if necessary. Major oral surgery is also an option, but many patients do not want to go through that procedure. The newest options is to prevent the lip from raising too much. This can be done with Botox. The advantage is as we age and the lips and face tend to sag, no permanent procedures have been done to the upper lip. There are many alternatives to help you achieve that beautiful smile.
